7 Ways to Celebrate Sustainability

We love to talk about being sustainable and the importance of environmental awareness, but it can be hard to know how we can put these words into action. It’s easier said than done, isn’t it?
Worry not! Here are seven ways you can actively celebrate sustainability.

Spend Some Time Outside
It can be easy to lose sight of what’s important when we get lost in our own hectic lives, but nothing reminds us about the importance of sustainability better than going out in nature. Appreciating the wonders of the world is the perfect way to rekindle that love for the planet. Hopefully, it’ll inspire you to practice sustainability more often.

Conscious Transportation
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 29% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. Being more conscious when it comes to how we get from one place to another can really make a difference.
If it’s possible, walk or ride your bike to school or work. If it’s too far, take the bus. Carpool even! There are so many alternatives to just driving your car.

Get Down and Dirty
Volunteer! There are plenty of organizations that bring people together to plant trees, pick up trash, or simply go on hikes to reconnect with nature. Just Google “environmental volunteering near me” and see what pops up!
If you can’t find anything, that’s okay! There’s nothing stopping you from going out on a nice, warm Saturday morning and planting a tree or picking up a couple bags-worth of litter.
Shop Sustainably
Fast fashion is one of the leading causes of climate change. According to CBS, it makes an even bigger impact than the airline industry.
Sustainable fashion is the alternative. Rather than buying cheap, throw-away-after-ten-uses clothes from places like Shein, you can buy timeless pieces that not only last longer and stay out of the landfills but feel better too. By switching to sustainable fashion, you’re helping the earth and yourself.

Sell or Swap Unwanted Clothes
The Washington Post has reported that 11.15 million tons of textiles ended up in landfills in the year 2017. Yeah, that’s right. 11.15 million tons. In a year! You can help challenge this statistic by selling or swapping your unwanted clothes. Places like Depop and Poshmark come in real handy for this.

Start Composting
Composting has numerous benefits. According to the U.S. Composting Council, it can save water, reduce waste, prevent soil erosion, promote healthier plant growth, and combat climate change—just to name a few.

Speak Up!
Advocate for sustainable practices! This one’s incredibly important. Lead by example and tell your friends and family how you’re contributing to a healthier planet. Who knows? Maybe you’ll spark some inspiration in someone, who will spark inspiration in someone else. It might not always feel like it, but individual actions can make a real difference.

Don’t Forget to Celebrate!
Remember that these actions don’t need to be done from a place of guilt or anxiety. They’re simply ways to celebrate the earth and awareness of sustainability. It’s a wonderfully beautiful planet we live on, and by doing what we can to take care of it is something to appreciate.
Now, go out there, act, and smile—this is a celebration after all!
