A Few Tricks to Living Happier

It can be difficult sometimes to maintain a happy and positive outlook on life.  Especially when you are bombarded with media that focuses on doom and gloom, or when you are too caught up with work to stop and smell the roses.  However, maintaining this positive outlook can be crucial in achieving your goals and living a healthy life.  Studies show prolonged negative emotions can cause health problems, such as coronary heart disease and even cancer.

It’s time to let go of that negativity and let your positive emotions take over.  These are some of my strategies for getting happy quick!

Live in the Moment:

Slow down and really take a closer look at what is right in front of you.   Develop your awareness and pay closer attention to your surroundings.  You could be missing out on lots of small things that make you happy.  It could be a rainbow in the sky, the sound of a baby laughing, or a cute fluffy squirrel crossing your path.  You never know what you’ll find when you start paying attention.

Be Grateful:

Think about what you have in your life right now and pick out one thing you are grateful for.  Sometimes only focusing on the future can lead to anxiety. It is easy to get overwhelmed while thinking about your to do list, or all the things that you have not achieved yet.  Pick something that you already have and think about how great it is! It could be as simple as a shining sun, a loving pet, or your best friend.

Don’t Hold Grudges:

Is that person who wronged you worth risking your health?  Let it go and try to focus on the people in your life that make you happy. You are the only one who has power over your emotions, and many believe that focusing on the past could cause depression.

Fake It till You Make It:

Smile more!  A smile can make all the difference and boost not only your mood, but the mood of others around you as well.   A Study completed by Barbara L. Fredrickson and Robert W. Levenson shows that on average, people who smile while experiencing negative emotions are more likely to recover from negative emotions faster.

Power of Laughter:

No one can deny the power of laughter in brightening up your mood.  Watch a little bit of your favorite funny TV show or even search for some funny Memes.  I think the best way to laugh is to find a friend or co-worker who can make you laugh so hard you cry.  It’s my recommendation to take these breaks for laughter every day and remember to enjoy life.

Look at Something Beautiful:

Whenever I gaze upon something of beauty I am always reminded of how amazing this world is.  I get so absorbed in looking at something that I can get a feeling of losing myself in it.  It’s that achievement of what is called “flow state” that helps me get into a happier and calmer state of mind.

Take A Walk in Nature:

Many new studies show that nature can make you kinder, happier, and more creative; something as simple as taking a walk in your neighborhood park can instantly boost your happiness.  It gives you a feeling that you are connected to something bigger then yourself and helps you realize that you are a part of the amazing circle of life.  It is also just a great place to calm your brain and reset your mindset.

Dance to Your Own Beat:

Dancing to your favorite song can instantly boost your mood. The activity of moving around will release feel-good endorphins.  Just a little bit can go a long way, even one five-minute song can boost endorphins enough to have some serious stress busting effects.  Take it up one notch higher and belt out your favorite tune at the same time.

Something as simple as enjoying the little things can lead to a happier life.  Take this advice and try a few of my tricks, or even better find a few tricks of your own!
